The Flat Back 4, London's leading seven-piece jazz funk quartet, grew up around saxophonist David Harrison out of the infamous Honkin' Hep Cats in 1997 - with many of the same members of that good-time jump jive band electing to follow the calling to the faith of the Cool Groove. The original quartet comprised David on alto, a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music, bass supremo Steve Kershaw, award-winning alumnus of the Musicians Institute in LA and bassist with the Anglo-Scandinavian jazz trio Stekpanna, and the legendary Potts brothers: Maff on Fender Rhodes & Hammond and Si on drums, founders of the Flat 5 record label and the Vinyl TV production company. The Flat Back 4, named on account of an unhealthy fixation with Arsenal Football Club, was soon augmented by the trumpet of Duncan McNaughton and Amos Miller on trombone, giving us rich, smooth horn lines. Finally our pyrotechnical guitarist Danny Farray rolled up, fresh from the Canary Islands, and we were seven. But we forgot to change our name. Our music is simple. We let an irresitible groove take hold, set it to simmer, and lay on some solid, funky brass. Maff makes his move, Danny lets loose, and when the audience is exhausted we do it just a little more. Inspiration in our music comes from a variety of sources ranging from David's garden pond to the contents of Steve's fridge.
