The design of this site is based around sets of colours I have collected this year. Walking down Kingston Hill on a crisp, orange afternoon last Autumn, I picked up a handful of leaves. When I got home I scanned them in to my computer and, magnifying the image until all I could see were individual pixels, I chose the sixteen shades which best seemed to define the mood of the season and filled squares with them. I'm not especially well-known for my visual sense but even I could see that the colours I'd selected had an inherent coherence. I had no idea what I would do with these colours but I resolved to follow up with a Winter version and one for Spring, and I'm currently collecting a Summer version. The Winter one comes from a walk at New Year on the banks of Loch Ness, and includes the bark of Silver Birch, heather shoots and local stone all reduced to 16 hopelessly insufficient colours. Spring was in my garden here in Hackney on the first warm day. The blues which dominate the site are actually the result of reversing the Winter shades. Feel free to download the gifs below if you are stuck for colour ideas.
AUTUMN WINTER SPRING
All photos of diggers and most of the other images are by Heather McDonough, who also spent masses of time advising me about the visuals. I modelled the animated dig-digs in Cinema4d and built the site using Dreamweaver. Thanks to Mike and Jim for answering all my stupid questions.
