McDonough's work is consistently concerned with 'series' - sequences placed within a specific context. The work is about memory, time, location, light, obsession, curiosity and the need to keep and collect. McDonough's most recent large scale work is a specially commissioned permanent installation at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts. The piece incorporates large photographs and illumination placed directly into the fabric of the original building to create a subtle yet ever present sculptural work on 4 floors of an internal courtyard. In 1998, she completed an MA in Drawing at Wimbledon School of Art , where she was examining the connections between drawing and photography in relation to collecting and hoarding. Heather is currently Course Leader at Anglia Polytechnic University for the Photographic and Digital Media B.A. Degree Course. She has been teaching since 1993, and has been a visiting lecturer at London Guildhall University, Winchester School of Art, Nene University College Northampton, and Cavendish College, London. She has run educational workshops at the Cambridge Darkroom and at the Serpentine Gallery. Commercially commissioned work includes Book cover photography for Namara Design, CD covers for Flat Five Records and Web Design. She lives in East London with her musician husband, small son, 2 cats and a red car.
